General
Red Rascal is currently being grown commercially in several regions, mainly Waikato, Central North Island and Southland, and has aroused considerable public interest. Tuber number and yield potential both high. With high resistance to late blight and powdery scab, Red Rascal could have potential to be grown organically.
Tuber Description
- Oval to slightly flat in shape, always smoother than Desiree.
- Red skin colour, slightly darker than Desiree.
- Very white flesh colour.
Disease and pest resistance
- Has very high resistance to late blight, better than Rua.
- Has very good resistance to powdery scab.
- Has reasonable resistance to soft root rot.
- Has no PCN resistance.
Consumer Quality
- Major potential is as a fresh market, red, pre-pack potato.
- Very little after-cooking greying or stem end darkening.
- Generally acknowledged as having very good eating quality.
